My new book "Video Game Firsts" is now available on Amazon.com as a hardback, trade paperback or as a Kindle download.
From the first video game ever created to the dawn of online gaming, VIDEO GAME FIRSTS takes you through hundreds of gaming breakthroughs that built a multi-billion-dollar industry.
As early as the 1950s, engineers began experimenting with the idea of manipulating dots on a TV screen. From those humble beginnings sprang the first video arcade machine, the first home video game console, the first ROM cartridge, wireless controllers, and every modern-day gaming amenity included in your favorite console or game.
Explore the early days of video games, the mania of titles that took over the world, and learn about the people behind the pixels in VIDEO GAME FIRSTS.

8 Bit Den creates modern video games with a retro twist. Each of our games has been inspired by one or several vintage arcade video games, Atari 2600 games, Intellivision, Colecovision, early NES titles, and rare and odd offerings from the early days of video games.
Our first release, Cirlynthia, is a circular ping pong style game inspired by the earliest video games including William Higgenbotham's "Tennis For Two", Ralph Baer's "Table Tennis" on the Magnavox Odyssey, and of course the seminal classic "Pong" by Allan Alcorn at Atari.
Cirlynthia is available for purchase and play at 8bitden.itch.io/cirlynthia
8 Bit Den's second, old school style video game is now available for FREE PLAY at 8biden.itch.io You join Narvel Mace's school of crop dusting and learn how to pilot a prop plane to avoid barnyard animals and windmills, while collecting fuel and flying through barn doors! It's a hoot!
8 BIT DEN AND AI
8 Bit Den uses AI tools to write codes for video game development. Our main strengths are idea brainstorming and asset creation, including logos, sprites, game graphics, sound effects, and theme songs. Using retro video games in the 8-bit style as our starting point, we develop games that feel like undiscovered gems from the 1970s or 1980s. You might swear you played one of our games as a child! While the debate over AI rages, we've found it to be a very useful tool for writing the complex JavaScript necessary to build our games. It still takes an amazing amount of effort and time to develop video games with AI. Anyone that tells you that it takes no skill to do so hasn't tried themselves. It takes an understanding of how to interact with AI tools such as ChatGPT, and it takes an incredible amount of patience, as it's still a burgeoning field.
We understand that some people are put off by the environmental footprint of AI. We aren't big fans of giant datacenters and all of the water it takes to cool them ourselves. It's our hope that the entire process becomes more efficient and environmentally friendly as the technology progresses.
If you have an interest in working with us to develop a retro-style video game, please email CJ at cj@8bitden.com
